Information

Applications

Cheiloplasty is most often performed on people who have previously had lip augmentation with permanent materials or because over time the injected product has caused a chronic inflammatory reaction.

Lip augmentation with filler materials may cause redness, itching sensation, stiffness, hard lip, appearance of lumps or asymmetrical irregularities or general lip augmentation causing excessive volume.

This nodule or lump that projects outward from the lip is a granuloma that appears due to a scar reaction generated around the implanted product.

The defenses identify the implanted product as a foreign body and react by creating a capsule that surrounds the implant. This capsule is the one that can increase in size due to the chronic inflammatory process that has been caused and is the reason for the deformity that we must treat.

Our doctors explain

Lip reduction or Secondary or Reparative Cheiloplasty, is most often done in people who have previously had lip augmentation with permanent materials or because over time the injected product has caused a chronic inflammatory reaction. In the video it is performed with CO2 laser.

Lip reduction treatments

Queilolaserlisis

Laserlysis is performed with a 980mm FOX diode laser. The laser fiber, which is the size of a fine needle 300-400 microns, is introduced through the skin until it comes into contact with the material to be removed. The heat transmitted by the laser fiber liquefies the product that injected in the form of gel has solidified and caused chronic inflammation. The liquefied substance slides through the small channel created by the laser fiber and exits through the entrance hole to the outside.
The number of sessions required varies from 1 to 3, always spaced more than 2 months apart.

The procedure lasts between 30-45 minutes.

After lip reduction treatment with cheilolaserlisis there is swelling of the treated lip that can last up to 7 days.

It is performed under local anesthesia and on an outpatient basis.

Co2 laser

Lip reduction with the CO2 laser is achieved by controlled vaporization of the lip area where the nodule is located.
The CO2 laser has a wavelength of 10,600nm which is absorbed by the water in the tissues that transforms it from liquid to gas and destroys the tissue by heating.

The heat that is dispersed to the surrounding tissue is minimal, avoiding injury to the area that is not to be treated.

  • Allows treatment of difficult to access or small areas.
  • No bleeding
  • No suture required

The treatment for lip reduction usually has to be repeated several times in the same location, always spaced one session from the other more than 2 months.

It is incorporated to normal life the same day. It takes longer to heal than the usual surgery, because with the vaporization of the tissue the lesion is left open and has to close and regenerate by spontaneous healing of the treated area.
A topical cream should be applied for 5-7 days to help the healing process.

Extraction by surgery

The lip reduction procedure consists of making an elliptical transverse incision along the lip between the lateral commissures in the mucosa of the inner edge. After the incision, the excess lip mucosa and the product that was injected are removed. The edges are then closed with a resorbable suture. These stitches fall out on their own and if in 7 days there is any remaining stitch, it is removed in the control visit.
It is recommended that the first 3 days after the operation a soft diet without eating very solid food and gesticulate as little as possible.
Lip reduction surgery is performed under local anesthesia in an outpatient operating room.
The procedure takes approximately one hour.

The scar is hardly visible or almost imperceptible since it is located on the inner edge of the labial mucosa, making it very difficult to see.

The complications and risks of the intervention, although very few, exist and can be:

  • Asymmetry
  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Numbness
  • Cushioning
  • Decreased mobility
  • Abnormal scars.
