Onychocryptosis
What is
What is Onychocryptosis?
Onychocryptosis or incarnate nail occurs when the edge of the toenail digs into the lateral ends of the toe, producing pain, redness and inflammation.
Information
Causes
There are multiple causes that can lead to a nail digging in at the lateral ends. The most frequent are nail malformations and incorrect nail cutting in young patients; while in adults, trauma, the use of inappropriate footwear and footprint problems are the most common.
Treatment
To treat onychocryptosis or incarnate nail, there are different hygienic measures that can be useful in patients with mild forms. However, in more severe cases, surgical techniques are necessary .
Chemical matricectomy with phenol is the technique of choice because of its low recurrence rate. Phenol has three properties that make it suitable for this problem. It has a high coagulation capacity so that stitches are not necessary. In addition, it is a potent disinfectant, thus minimizing the possibility of postoperative infection. Finally, it has anesthetic properties so recovery is quick and painless.
The same technique can be used to remove a nail permanently in cases of very severe and painful deformity.
