Breast reduction
What is
What is breast reduction?
Women with large breasts may have some problems due to this excess weight, such as back and neck pain, skin irritations under the breast and respiratory problems.
The purpose of reduction mammoplasty is to provide a woman with smaller breasts and with a more proportional shape to the rest of her body.
Information
How it works
Breast reduction or reduction mammoplasty is a surgical procedure to reduce the size of the breasts by removing fat, breast tissue and skin, making them smaller, lighter and firmer. It can also reduce the size of the areola.
The surgery lasts between 1.5h and 3.5h.
Procedure
We apply energy on the most superficial layer of the skin (EPIDERMIS). This will then pass to the deeper layers (DERMIS AND FATTY LAYER).
The skin offers resistance to the passage of current, which is what we know as the bioimpedance of the tissue. This resistance generates heat that will not exceed 60 degrees. By increasing the temperature, proteins that are already in the dermis are activated: the shock proteins, which will stimulate the fibroblast starting to produce new collagen.
Results
After a breast reduction it will take a few months for your breasts to take on their final appearance; even then, the breasts will change with normal hormonal stimuli, pregnancy or weight changes.
You may need some time to get used to your new body image.
It is important to remember that after a reduction the scars are visible and permanent, although your plastic surgeon will do his best to make them as inconspicuous as possible.
Over time, the scars will become less noticeable.
Recovery
Post-operative pain is controlled with medication, although the breasts may be sore for a couple of weeks.
In general, normal life is resumed within 48 hours, except for physical exercise and weight-bearing activities for approximately 3 weeks.
The bandage or dressings will be removed in a few days, being replaced by a special bra, to be worn as instructed by your surgeon.
The first menstruation after a reduction can cause the breasts to swell and hurt.
